Right. I built the Corvette Sportwagon that was on the cover in July 1972. That’s right. I built the prototype and then built six more of them. I still have one in my shop. My first custom—my first car—was a 1950 Ford coupe that I bought for $35. I was 16 and still in high school [Lincoln Park, Michigan]. When it was finished, Rodding and Restyling magazine did a feature on it. May of 1961. My first custom—my first car—was a 1950 Ford coupe that I bought for $35. A guy I knew needed to sell it—let’s just say he was going away on a long paid vacation, courtesy of the state—and the price was hard to resist: $1500. I saw one sell recently at auction for $41,000. The first time I saw this car, I thought it was one of the ugliest things I’d ever seen—so ugly it was cute. It was in really good shape when I got it, just a few whiskey dents, parking-lot dings, that sort of thing. Ran good, too. My original plan was to just restore it. But I got sidetracked with other projects, and it sat in a corner of my shop for about 13 years before I got around to it. Besides, it gets great fuel economy. I just thought it would be fun. Hey, how many Isetta taxis have you seen? Besides, it gets great fuel economy.
